CD Release show on October 9 at Cafe Du Nord!
So, my new CD “Flux” is finally ready! My band and I will be performing at the wonderful Cafe Du Nord on October 9th w/ Essence, Pills & Jackets, and Forget About Boston!
I’m really looking forward to the show. I know my set will rock, I’m playing with some great bands (Pills & Jackets in particular), and Cafe Du Nord is pretty much the coolest place in the bay. Woot!

Getting my CD mastered!
I’m flying out to Carrboro, NC tomorrow morning to get my CD mastered. And how! I’ve been working with Brent Lambert at The Kitchen to hone my mixes and make them as ready as possible for mastering, and I’m super happy with the results; he and his staff have been surprisingly helpful.
Naturally, this means a couple things:
- CD will be out soon
- I’ll be able to post new tracks before too long
- I get to eat some amazing Southern food. (Fried-chicken biscuits, anyone?!?!)
Hardest part of the trip = getting to the BART at 6 to make my flight.
Done recording the album! And playing a show in Alameda on Friday.
I’m done with all the recording / editing / mixing / producing / cud-chewing / etc. The album is finished! And by finished, I mean it still needs to get mastered (by my amazingly talented ME, just you watch, he’s sick!) and I still need to put the last touches on the artwork, but it’s D-U-N. Werd. It’ll be out soon.
And in the meanwhile, I’ll be playing a show this Friday, May 8, 8pm at the Rooster’s Roadhouse in Alameda, 1700 Clement Ave, at Grand… with my good friend and amazing musician Steve Laciak. He’s one of my favorite people, musically and non-musically alike. Join us for tunes and drinks (do they serve drinks? they do? oh good!) as we rock it out for you.
Try, try, try, try, try, try, try, (try?)
Sometimes you’ve gotta record a song seven or eight times before you really nail it. Done, and, done.
Show this Friday at Blake’s, with samples from the new CD!
So I’m supposedly “not playing shows” while I’m making my album… but that doesn’t always work. I’m playing one at Blake’s this Friday.
I’ll be playing some songs on the loop-station, some with my good friend Joe Hickey, and some straight-up acoustic.
I’ll be giving out free sampler CD’s of the upcoming album, only at gigs. So if you want to hear what I’ve been doing, get your butt in gear and get out to the show!
How’s the album coming?
The album has been going amazingly well. I’ve got most of the songs tracked, and now I’m doing overdubs. For most of them, I’ve had a “write new parts as you go” approach.
I don’t think that many of the songs are going to end up being acoustic-only. I play them acoustic-only when I’m playing them live, so I’m trying to make them all do something special on the album version. My good friend Joe Hickey has provided me with some invaluable support on a couple songs, and I’ve been writing countermelodies like mad to a bunch of the songs.
Other highlights of the recording process include the EBow, a really cool device that turns a guitar into an almost-bowed-synth-string-sounding instrument. I’ve been playing some *gasp* electric guitar. And there might be another musician or two on the album as well, depending how the songs end up.
On one hand, the process is taking way longer than I’d imagined. On the other hand, the process of getting to create entirely new versions of my songs is also way more fun that I could have imagined. So that’s probably why I’m letting it take so long!
Thank you all for sticking with me while I’m in hiding!
Now recording a new album!
I just wrote a huge blog about the album and deleted it. Twice.
I’ll write more as the process gets further along, but it has officially begun.
New songs and new CD’s
So I’m currently in the processing of mixing an album for some of my very best friends… there are three of them, and they’re my second best friend according to myspace, but that’s all the hint you’re getting. =) It’ll take somewhere between a month or four to get it done, but their CD will be really nice when it’s completed.
But once that’s all done and stuff, I’m going to start recording my own album, which is going to be a BLAST. Big incredible fun blastules, like kapow. Lots of incredible new songs, with lots of (hopefully) incredible new production ideas to make them really come alive. I’m still hemming and hawing about whether or not I want to bring in other performers on the cd, and to what extent, yadda yadda yadda. But rest assured it’s going to be incredibly cool. The goal is a CD that can crunch, twinkle, and writhe with the loudest bowl of cereal out there.
I can already tell that some of the highlights are going to be the… well, the one where I…
I can’t tell you. Hah. Sorry. I’ll put up some little demo-style-version-kinda tracks in time for my birthday. But I guarantee it’ll completely blow you away compared to my live stuff (especially if you’re used to seeing me only play acoustic, like at Blake’s). Stay tuned, yall.
